Health Education Platform

Our "virtual reality learning platform" concept brings children a life-like world of choices with real consequences empowering them to change the course of their lives.
Elevator Pitch
Those with less have less time in this world. According to a study by UTSW, life expectancy is strongly associated with poverty, and health disparities (preventable differences) are a big part of the cause. We have created the concept of a virtual reality learning platform- where children living in poverty would be empowered to guide their own learning pathways as they are immersed in a life-like world of lifestyle choices with real consequences. This early intervention will prevent conditions/diseases these children are projected to grow up to face at disproportionate rates in comparison to the rest of the population.
Startup Journey
I’m a Psychiatric Advanced Practice Provider who graduated with an MPAS from UNTHSC. Before PA School, I was a primary school teacher, and everything I knew about medicine was through life experience. Now that I have truly learned and developed a deep understanding of medicine, I realize just how unaware I truly was. I find myself wondering…”How did I not know that before?” I didn’t know because I, myself, am a product of poverty. I submitted my idea to HSC Next, and they connected me with campus professionals who led me to the UNT Denton Computer Science and Engineering Project Pitch where I met Poulomi, a PhD student, and our backend developer. Poulomi met Jeffrey because he was an undergraduate student in her course. As his TA, she witnessed his potential with front-end development and brought him onto the team. We have validated our idea by analyzing businesses that offer health education and found they use outdated techniques such as worksheets and videos. We have begun executing our idea using Unreal Engine software. We want to test our platform with children soon in summer camps. Our greatest need to launch is funding for machine learning data sets and staffing students.
